TOSHIBA DRIVES THE STORAGE INDUSTRY FORWARD WITH NEW HIGH CAPACITY AND HIGH PERFORMANCE HDDs

320GB Drive Highest Capacity For 2.5-inch Form Factor

Germany, 21 August - Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division today reinforced its leadership in high performance, small form factor hard disk drives with the launch of a 320GB drive – the highest capacity available for the 2.5-inch Hard Disk Drive (HDD) market. Delivering an industry leading capacity and Toshiba’s Free Fall Sensor technology, the new dual-platter MK3252GSX HDD is perfectly suited for incorporation into notebook computers and small form factor PCs.

The industry leading aerial density of 254 Gbit/inch² has been achieved through advances in the magnetic media used in the HDD platters and the components utilised to read and write data. High capacity HDDs are ideal for consumers who wish to store extensive libraries of digital media such as mp3 audio and high definition video. For business users, the new 320GB HDD offers ample storage for mobile workers who need to store substantial amounts of data locally.

Free Fall Sensor technology utilises an embedded optional motion sensor to detect if the drive is in free fall. In such cases, the hard disk drive quickly and immediately moves the read/write heads away from the spinning platter to
prevent them damaging any data upon impact.

In addition to the high capacity HDD, Toshiba’s new family of high performance hard disk drive will deliver speeds of 7,200rpm – the company’s fastest HDDs to date. The 200GB MK2049GSY and the family drives have all been developed for high performance notebook and desktop PC but are also ideally suited to for the burgeoning market for video-based consumer electronics applications such as Personal Video Recorders, IPTV set-top boxes and other recording systems. In these applications, the HDDs’ 16MB buffer memory and high speed spindle will ensure the optimum performance during data intensive workloads such as video editing and real-time video capture and are vital when looking to avoid frame dropping – where a loss of frames within a moving image can result in jagged and distorted playback.

“The launch of our new drives is reflective of our ongoing mission to ensure our technology matches the evolving usage habits of our customers,” explained Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division. “Digital media archiving, photo management and video capture have all exploded since the rise of social networking and user generated content sites. Our new hard drives offer both ample capacity and substantial performance to ensure that the end user experience when using these applications never falters.”
