Fujitsu Europe Limited launched its new MHZ2-BT series of 2.5” mobile hard disk drives (HDD) with a world-class storage capacity of up to 500GB (Half-Terabyte). That is among the highest capacity in the industry for 4,200 RPM HDDs with a 2.5” form factor. The new series of Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) drives is in response to the growing need of 2.5” form factor HDDs supporting high-volume storage in devices such as digital video recorders and external hard drives.
Energy-conscious
As an environmentally friendly product, the MHZ2-BT drives require only 1.8W of power for read and write operations, ranking them among the most power-efficient HDDs in their class. The series is one of many new products announced as part of Fujitsu’s Green Policy Innovation program, unveiled in December 2007, to promote energy-efficient products and services as a way to help customers lower their ecological footprint.
“With the global spread of digital broadcasts and Internet-based video distribution, along with higher storage requirements, there is an increasing need for high-capacity hard disk drives that can handle high-volume data storage in a portable form factor,” said Georg Dietsch, Fujitsu Director Storage Products Group EMEA. “With the growing worldwide concern over global warming and other environmental problems, there is a demand for hard disk drives that consume less electricity.”
Capitalising on its 40-year experience in HDD development, Fujitsu has responded to these needs with hard disk drives that have storage capacities of up to 500GB for use in personal computers, Digital Video Recorders (DVR), Set Top Boxes (STB) and external hard disk drives.
Leading specifications
Fujitsu designed the MHZ2-BT series to provide specifications that are vital for today's mobile computing applications, including storage capacities from 400GB to 500GB with a rotational speed of 4,200 RPM; SATA 3.0Gb per second interface; best-in-class idle power consumption in slumber mode of 0.5W (typ.), standby power consumption in slumber mode of 0.13W (typ.), and best-in-class read/write power consumption of 1.8W (typ.). Its average read/write seek time is 12/14 milliseconds; with a maximum data transfer speed of 300MB per second. The series´ average acoustic noise level is best-in-class 2.1 bels in idle mode whilst offering an operating shock tolerance of 325G (2ms).
ASBIS will begin the delivery of the Fujitsu MHZ2-BT series in August 2008.
